My work based on the stories of Countess Bathory. Of course it is no doubt more fantasy that fact but the legend has quite easily taken a hold in our minds and she is no doubt archetypal but symbolic of many other human vices as well as that again of the dark mother , deathly saturnine, Binah and the daughter of malkuth...shades of Lilith, but in a popular sense emanating from egocentric fears.

I love it  At first I thought this is traditional art - it looks like an oil painting.

lol, well no, but even that thought did cross my mind, Cthulhu being an priest and all, not this was just some hideous shadow self - that one which merely sits idly by, feeding off atrocity

digital, but a slow process as i continue to approach in a more traditional way - i would like to think its like oils, but i probably work much more like i am using soft pastels and coloured pencils.

thank you, yes I think there is a mixture of truth and fantasy as it seems it was in the interests of other groups at the time to blacken Bathory's name also

i think the atmosphere of it, i had a person there but the face just was not right, it seemed better when it disappear and replaced with something more malformed aborted creation - the Church often has proximity to horror, but also as the picture is fantasy i decided to risk it

Although Bathory did on occasion take virginal blood (I believe menstrual) and rub it in her skin under the notion it would keep her youthful and desirable, her actual crimes, I feel, are more interesting than what the legends painted.

thats really interesting! i did not know about the virgin menstrual blood but that really goes into deeper more interesting occult paths, - Kenneth Grant Kalas and all

Well there is some historical record to back it up, it was more blown out of proportions do to the tales of aristocrats of the age taking part in satanic or pagan rituals.
Sounds like what most rich people would do if they were bored today and didn't own yachts, islands or companies.

Much like any historical figure, good or bad.
Napoleon wasn't actually short, he was average height.
George Washington and that cherry tree story, made up.

The worst people however, far worse than the countess, were unfortunately very real.
Like Ghangis Khan or Mao Se Tung.

yes i agree, the legends like that of Bathory inhabit a more archetypal, mythical realm - like the dark mother, Saturn eating its young etc

Or rather historical figures are given mythic status because so little is known about them, they're believed to be magic or immortal, like Rasputin.

Fiction and nonfiction are pretty much the same in these instances... they were dark times where humanity was capable of such acts, it probably wasn't even all that shocking. Not that humanity isn't capable of of similar acts today, of course...

Nice work, at a glance it reminded me of the Salem Witch Trials painting by Thompkins Matteson.
