Holocaust in Utopia by Mitchellnolte Holocaust in Utopia by Mitchellnolte
Inspired by black metal and Gustave Dore - two big loves - my first attempt at Scratchboard etching - i like it alot and it is great for dark pictures of metaphysical doom - it amazes me how it is that pictures in black and white and chiaroscuro have such a dimension to them - that somehow the pictures can be read metaphorically, symbolically and all else metaphysical as much as or even in precedence to taking the picture literally. -

the name is taken from a song by Ureghal

How much would you charge for a original piece like this in 18"X24" format?
Please respond by note...

It's great seeing artists draw inspiration from Gustave (who is personally one of my favorite artists), and I can see that you have captured his style very well in a way that really speaks

Awesome piece!

I like it not because it's a dark piece because for me that's run of the mill but rather all the scratching you must've done to create this!

the scratch can take a while, though this was pretty rough and i need to spend even longer time in future

Any mix of Black Metal and Gustave Dore (a love of my as well) is harmonious beyond expectations..but THIS is a sure standout with sweeping apocalyptic imagery that leaves me in disturbed awe. Thank you.

thank you alot - i am glad others can appreciate the connection also - it is a curious one that black metal has with art - one that i like and i can think of only a few other genres which have such a connection with visual art - one would not think it but in some ways metal has a closer connection to classical music than any other genre

oh yes I agree. I think people who can't see or choose to ignore the artistic similarities of me dark metal genres really don't educate themselves with the classical music that is out there, besides their "100 best of classical music" CD. :)

Thank you very much - i really like this work too and despite its rough parts (the norm for me and my haphazard slap dash abilities) i still really like it mostly because i am not sure how i did it even. I have been experimenting with more scratchboard, but can go through so much valauable board before getting something to work in the black way this one has for me. scratchboard is though great and i have used it with a mix of photoshop more recently, but also done explicitly in just scratch for a 2 panel piece based on wuthering heights - i cant show it here but i found that scratchboard could definitely capture the dark romance of that tragedy

Hiya - thank you -i am glad you find this, as it is how they more or less appear in my minds eye. For good or ill i seem to be unable to picture them any other way, and you will see this soon enough in several larger followup works

Dore  great work. I like the line, little more chaotic than in Dore's works and reminding me of spider's web

yes, i am still learning how to do the line work - i would like to get eventually the control like Dore and his employed artists had in their prints, but also i take inspiration from Norman Lindsay who has wondering etchings and drawings also

Simple Black and White has more depth and can lend a more pronounced mood and/or atmosphere to a picture. The Twilight Zone, the original, was done in Black and White and still is scary today, you can see the horror in the people's eyes.

Colour can can detract from a picture if used incorrectly.

Nice linework. Ugly, chaos, struggle and violence and death.
